Big Changes Ahead: Introducing eIDAS 2.0 and the EUDI Wallet

We’re on the brink of a digital transformation in Europe with the introduction of the eIDAS 2.0 Regulation, which promises to redefine digital identity across the continent. The centerpiece of this new regulation is the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet), a tool designed to provide EU citizens with a secure, convenient digital identity. This innovative wallet will act as a universal key to access a wide range of both public and private digital services, giving users unprecedented control over their personal data and privacy.

A Unified Digital Identity Solution

As mandated by the eIDAS 2.0 Regulation, every EU member state will be required to provide at least one EUDI Wallet to its citizens. This initiative ensures a standardized and interoperable solution across Europe, simplifying digital interactions and enhancing security across the board.

Timeline for Development and Deployment

The development of the EUDI Wallet is well underway, with its architectural framework having been in development since mid-2022. Currently, in 2024, we are in the exciting proof-of-concept stage. We anticipate pilot testing in 2025, leading up to a full-scale rollout planned for 2026.

Mandatory Adoption Across Critical Sectors

Adoption of the EUDI Wallet goes beyond mere recommendation—it is a requirement. All banks, Payment Service Providers (PSPs), large-scale service providers with over 45 million users, and key industries are mandated to adopt this technology. This broad adoption is crucial for ensuring that the EUDI Wallet becomes a fundamental element of digital interaction within the EU.

The Future of Compliance and Privacy

At Hakata, we are committed to the principles of privacy, reusability, and decentralization in compliance. We are at the forefront of adopting and integrating emerging technologies such as zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) and self-sovereign identity (SSI). These technologies are gaining recognition from global regulators and are set to be at the heart of future compliance solutions that do not compromise on privacy.

The eIDAS 2.0 and the EUDI Wallet are more than just regulatory requirements—they are stepping stones towards a more integrated, secure, and user-friendly digital Europe. Stay tuned as we continue to embrace and implement these exciting advancements!
